The ultimate moving house checklist

Moving house is not just about making sure your belongings reach their destination in one piece – you also need to plan for the logistics, utilities and your wellbeing throughout the process. The key to a smoother move lies in breaking down the tasks and tackling them step by step.
6 weeks before: start planning & decluttering
Begin by going through each room of your current home and assessing what you really want to keep. Over the years, we accumulate things we no longer need, and moving is the perfect opportunity to declutter.
Sort your belongings into categories and consider selling unwanted items online or donating to your favourite charity.
4 weeks before: book key services & notify contacts
With the clutter out of the way, now’s the time to book essential services and notify important contacts about your move. Start by phoning electricity, water, and gas providers to shut off service where you live now and activate it at your future home.
Notify your bank and any subscription services of your change of address. Remember to redirect your mail through the Royal Mail service you’ll still receive your letters and packages. At this stage you’ll also want to book the removal company or van hire.
2 weeks before: confirm details & start packing
Start packing things you rarely need, such as winter clothes and reading materials. Write on every box what’s inside and which room it belongs in to simplify setting up your new home. Double-check the date with the removal company or anyone helping you on the day.
If you’re moving into a new build home, check the condition of your property beforehand to avoid any last-minute surprises.
1 week before: final preparations & essentials
Start preparing your ‘moving day essentials’ box, which should include all the things you’ll need immediately at your new property: toiletries, medications, snacks, phone chargers and important documents.
This is also the time to take care of any last-minute paperwork, such as finalising your rental agreement.
Moving day: remain calm and organised
Make sure you’ve had a good breakfast and don’t forget to stay hydrated throughout the day. Carry a box of necessary items with you so you won’t have to search through packed boxes for important things.
If you hire professional movers, stay nearby and monitor their work to ensure they handle your items gently. While movers put your stuff in the truck, check your old home one last time to ensure you haven’t forgotten anything.
First night in your new home: unpack the essentials
You may not have time to unpack everything right away, but getting the essentials ready, such as bed linen and clothing, will make your first night much more comfortable.
Post-move: organise the admin
After the excitement settles, take care of the administrative tasks that may have been pushed aside. This includes updating your driver’s licence, registering with a local doctor and sorting out any final details with your old home.
