How Gen Z is Redefining Wedding Fashion

As the 2025 wedding season kicks off, the aesthetics of walking down the aisle look very different from those of the last few decades. Gen Z, the generation known for rewriting the rules around identity, sustainability, and style, is ushering in a bold new era of wedding fashion—one that’s eco-conscious, non-traditional, and deeply personal.

Out With the Old, In With the Individual

Forget cookie-cutter bridal gowns and tuxedos.

Gen Z couples are favoring expressive, often the fashion that reflects who they are—not what tradition dictates. Whether it’s a thrifted satin slip dress from the ’90s or a custom suit in a bold color palette, self-expression is now the top priority.

“Authenticity is the new luxury,” says New York-based wedding stylist. “I see couples choosing outfits that reflect their love stories—like repurposed family heirlooms, upcycled vintage, or pieces they can wear again after the wedding.”

Sustainability Takes Center Stage

In a world increasingly aware of fast fashion’s environmental cost, many Gen Z brides and grooms are ditching one-time-use dresses and suits for something more meaningful. The rise of second-hand wedding attire—through platforms like Poshmark, and peer-to-peer rentals—has seen a boom, with TikTok videos tagged #ThriftedWeddingDress amassing millions of views.

For 26-year-old woman, who got married in a reworked 1984 gown from her mother’s closet, the choice was about more than aesthetics. “Wearing something sustainable was just as important to me as looking good,” she said. “It added a layer of emotional depth—and made me feel like I was honoring my roots.”

Personalized Jewelry That Tells a Story

In line with this shift toward individuality, engagement and wedding jewelry are also being reimagined. Many Gen Z shoppers are seeking ethically sourced stones, unique ring settings, and personalization over flashy diamonds.

Retailers like have adapted to this trend with expansive collections of customizable promise rings, engagement rings and wedding bands that let couples build something that reflects their story—whether that means a lab-grown diamond or a nontraditional gemstone.

“We’re seeing more couples come in with ideas they’ve sketched themselves,” says a Shane Co. spokesperson. “They don’t just want a ring—they want a narrative in metal and stone.”

A New Kind of ‘Big Day’

Gen Z views their big day as being more focused on personal significance than elaborate displays. Whether through sustainable fashion or uniquely crafted rings, today’s couples are marrying tradition with innovation.

And in doing so, they’re not just redefining what weddings look like. They’re reshaping what love looks like in the 21st century.
